THANK YOU FOR STOPPING BY!
My name is Mila Boekestyn, I specialize in maternity, newborn, baby and family photography, serving Airdrie, Calgary and surrounding areas in beautiful Alberta, Canada.
A LITTLE BIT ABOUT MYSELF:
I fell in love with photography as a child: my grandfather was an amateur black and white photographer who developed his work in his home darkroom. I remember looking at the white paper and witnessing the magical process, seeing shapes appear, eventually revealing a recognizable image.
WHERE DO YOU COME FROM AND WHAT DOES MILASHKA MEANS?
Originally from Moscow, Russia I have lived in many other places before making Calgary, AB my current home – including Montreal, QC, and Toronto, ON. So, what does “Milashka” means? It translated from Russian as “cutie” or “sweetheart” and that is often how we see our newborns and sometimes our partners and family members. And since my name - Mila is incorporated into this word, it was an obvious choice for my business name. If you want to learn one Russian word – that’s a good one to start!
WHAT’S YOUR BACKGROUND?
Although I was fascinated and loved photography since I was a child, I went to University to study Psychology. After graduating, I worked in the mental health field, and I am very passionate about mental health awareness. This professional experience made me appreciate how different and unique we all are, and made me see how important it is to have a good support system, friendships and families.
PSYCHOLOGIST TO PHOTOGRAPHER?
I have never thought of myself as particularly “artistic” person even though I took music and singing lessons as a child and wrote poems and books as a teenager. I have always associated “Artistic” individuals with visual arts such as drawing and painting. Since I was not particularly good at either of these, I would’ve never described myself as Artistic before. That is until I picked up a camera and fell in love with photography. Ever since my 2 children were born and I was capturing their every moment, I started to take classes online and really mastering the art of photography. Now I proudly call myself a photographer – specializing in Newborn, Maternity, Children and Family photography and when describing myself I do call myself artistic and I am one of those few people who can say that I am doing what I love for a living. I love working with children and families, capturing their connections and interactions. I especially love photographing newborns – there is just something very special in this brand new, innocent life. When my clients see me work with their brand-new baby, they call me a “baby whisperer” and they always mention how patient and calm I am – and I just tell them – working with a newborn for me is like meditation. It is a privilege and I am so blessed to be able to capture these precious memories for my clients.
